Flu Q & A

What is the flu?

The flu is a viral infection that everyone experiences at some point in their lives. If your body is healthy, you may be able to recover from the flu with at-home treatment.

However, in severe cases of the flu, it can lead to fatal consequences. Having the flu can also make you vulnerable to other illnesses, such as pneumonia and ear and sinus infections.

Seeking treatment as soon as you have symptoms of the flu can help you recover faster and prevent complications.

Common symptoms of the flu include:

  • Couch
  • Fever and chills
  • Headaches
  • Body aches
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

At Prosperity Health and Wellness, Melinda provides same-day sick visits, allowing you to schedule a flu appointment when you need it most.

What causes the flu?

The flu is a contagious disease that can spread quickly from person to person. If someone is sick with the flu (coughing and sneezing), they’re spreading tiny droplets of mucus in the air around them and anything that comes into contact with them.

If you happen to be around that person, you could transfer the virus to your mouth, nose, or hands.

Every year, there is a unique strain of the flu virus that requires a specific flu shot to fight off that type of flu. If you have encountered that type of flu before, your immune system remembers how to fight it off.

How can a flu shot help me?

The flu shot is an important part of preventive health care. It can help prevent you from catching the current strain of the flu virus. Your immune system creates antibodies to defend against the virus and any future encounters with that particular flu strain.

Since there are many strains of the flu virus, you’ll need flu shots annually to protect you against the most widespread strain at that point in time.

Flu shots are especially beneficial if you have poor immune system or health problems that put you at a high risk of developing serious complications.

How do you treat the flu?

If you have mild flu symptoms, Melinda may recommend conservative treatments, such as resting at home and drinking plenty of water.

She may also recommend over-the-counter (OTC) flu medication to help with headaches or a sore throat.

With severe flu symptoms that haven’t improved within a few days, you should go to your nearest ER. These symptoms include:

  • Severe chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Confusion
  • Blue lips or face
